Plodding along

As I got home at a decent hour, decided to head out for a run.  Opted for a 30 minute route instead of the 45 minute route as it has been a while since I’ve laced up the running shoes.  Felt slow and heavy and well, like I haven’t run in a while.  But, it felt great.  :)  Was much more awake and it just felt good to get moving.  I even did some sit-ups (~100), push-ups (~25, most were only halvsies, need to strengthen my upper body big time!), and stretched afterwards (while watching part of Michael Jackson’s This is It–better than what I was expecting).

WBOG

My old team needed women subs, so I dusted off the cleats and played on a lovely Tuesday evening.  I guess I should say, they needed women period.  We were short a woman and therefore had no subs.  Running around for and hour and a half is great exercise, but as it’s been ~8 months since I last played, it’s rather hard on the body.  (Update: writing this 4 days later and I’m still a bit sore, 1 and 2 days later I was quite miserable, reminder to STRETCH after a soccer game!!!)

Had a fun time even if we lost.  Though we were a man short, we kept up the pressure!

Discovery Park

I made it! The alarm went off very early this morning after a late night where a lot of food and a few alcoholic beverages were consumed.  Making the decision to get out the door in time to make it Discovery Park a very difficult decision.  Reminded myself that Discovery Park is one of my favorite places to run, I’d get my weekend run over with, and there were likely going to be some running buddies there!  There were 5 of us, ran the full loop with Scott.  This means we included the dreaded stairs.  Both of us were quite content in that section to run the flats and walk the actual stairs.  All of us at some point passed the barefoot runner.  Craziness.  Have been told this is a 5 mile loop, but I think it’s closer to 4.5.  With that big hill the 9:46 pace makes more sense.

Scott was trying to talk Doug and me into running the SJ&J Half.  It sounds like a great course so as long as I’m around Labor Day weekend I’ll sign up (uh-oh, will that interfere with Bumbershoot?).  Didn’t seem like Scott was able to talk Doug into signing up.  Doug is 69 years old and right now wants to stick with full marathons .  This is after having heart surgery a few years ago.  He may be slow, but he’s in awesome shape and has a great attitude.

Tempted to see if Laureen and Tori would be interested in teaming up for the Seattle Oyster Urban Adventure Race. Possibly a few others who actually bike?  One great thing is that the Arthritis Foundation is a beneficiary of this race!

Yahoo

Back onto the wagon I go.  I was on vacay for 1.5 weeks after the half and did not want to let another weekend slide without a run.  Went out on a beautiful, cool(ish) morning on my regular route.  Felt pretty good.  As summer has finally arrived in Seattle I know I’ll be dealing with some warmer runs and will need to fit in some early runs before work during the week.

There were a ton of folks out on their boats.  I guess people just anchor up and play in and out of the water all weekend?  Looked like a lot of fun.

Now to figure out what to sign up for next.  A sprint tri?  Maybe another run.  Just got an e-mail from Scott regarding the Super Jock & Jill Half which starts and finishes at the Red Hook Brewery in Woodinville.  I thought about this race last year, and then proceeded to fall off the running wagon.  If I at least keep up with my 2-3 runs/week, I think it’s doable!  I’m even hoping to run with a few friendly faces at Discovery Park this Saturday.  :)

Short run

Quick run in the neighborhood.  Still feeling a bit on the sluggish side.  My belly hasn’t been super happy with me which I hope doesn’t hurt me too much before Saturday.  But, haven’t been super smart about all of my meals the last few days.  Hit the EXPO this afternoon, spent too much time on my feet with a bunch of random snack and energy samples and capped it off with a hotdog from one of the vendors set up for the Mariner’s game.  Gorgeous day, would be lovely to have a half day for the game.

Counting down

Last regular loop before the race.  A beautiful day to head to Seward Park.  Very busy out–kids are out of school and the sun is out, a happy combination.  Feeling sluggish though, but I remember this happened last year too.  Maybe the body is just preparing for the upcoming race?

JIM Training Week 16 - Golden Gardens

Last JIM run before the half!  A dreary and chilly morning, can’t believe it’s mid June!  Started at Golden Gardens for an ~75 minute run.  Our route was given to us by Kelsey who lives in the hood.  Some horrible, steep stairs to start!  Check out the elevation gain on the map and you’ll see what I mean.  Killer, anyhow, felt great once we actually reached the point where the rest of the run was downhill.

This American Life Loop

Ran my regular route with the iPod again, but instead of music, I listened to an episode of ‘This American Life’.  Really enjoy listening to that program in general, but think I’ll stick to music if I use the nano during runs.  Or maybe I just need to find more uplifting episodes.

Loop w/ iPod

Ran my regular route with my iPod and it appears I ran a bit faster than my usual pace.  I didn’t really enjoy running with my iPod during last year’s training, but I upgraded to a nano at the end of last year and didn’t run into any issues during this run, other than a realization I need to update some of the music I have on iTunes.  Ended up listening to the radio (fun feature) trying to find stations with upbeat tunes.
